Laboratory of Genetic Toxicity

Aims

  • Study the genotoxic, mutagenic, clastogenic and/or recombinagenic potential of chemotherapics
  • Investigate the mutagenic and genotoxic activity of dental materials
  • Study the genotoxic and mutagenic action of environmental pollutants from industrial, urban and rural origin
  • Evaluate the modulatory activity of common substances in the human diet and herbal extracts on genetic toxicity of different chemicals

Research Areas

  • Induction of gene mutation, somatic recombination, genomic lesions and chromosome instability associated with drugs, dental products, plant extracts and other natural and synthetic compounds
  • Genetic toxicity associated with environmental contamination
  • Antigenotoxic potential of plant extracts and bioactive compounds present in the human diet
  • Standardization of new methodologies applied to mutagenesis

Techniques and Services

  • Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly)
  • Comet Assay (Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis assay-SCGE) in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster
  • Evaluation of in vivo genetic toxicity of drugs and phytotherapics, products currently used in dentistry, plant extracts and bioactive compounds present in the human diet and environmental samples
  • Diagnosis of in vivo modulating activity - antimutagenesis - of plant extracts and bioactive compounds present in the human diet
